“Free, free, free organic eggs and meat on offer”, cluck the indigenous chicken to all and sundry. We are low-maintenance free-rangers, scavenging from the wealth of Mother Nature’s insects, domestic and agricultural waste plus grass that doubles as our medicine. We love the sun and sleep in the dark of the night. We are beautiful and varied in color, resilient, agile and tough in body and character. We survive many storms of life from extremes of weather conditions to predators, sickness and seasonal food shortage. Thus our maturity time and survival rates are lower than our hybrid counterparts that are mass produced and pampered indoors with vaccines, feed, water and shelter.
Our yellow-yolk eggs are smaller and fewer than those of our exotic counterparts and our meat is tough and sweet. We are a formidable force on the market, satisfying human needs for nutrient-dense meat, eggs and manure. Our nearest kin are the kuroilers, more aggressive scavengers, faster growers and terrific layers five times more than we do.
We also make wonderful pets thanks to our friendly demeanor. We come with fun for your family and give life to your backyard. We are highly interactive to the extent that we respond to any name you give us, provided you persistently address us by it. We also respond well to children and offer ourselves to stimulate a sense responsibility and entrepreneurship among them.
We multiply naturally and nurse our children in the toughness of the jungle. Within our free range area you may supplement our food with a garden of greens or herbs, a bit of water and a yard fence to protect us from predators. That is the middle ground option; do not over restrict us. And don’t de-beak our males because then we cannot scavenge effectively and we can’t grip our females firmly during the mating process.
We are the chicken of the jungle.
