The dietary cultures of many societies and religions raise mixed feelings about pigs, considering them to be unclean. Jesus cared less about exorcising a legion of demons from a precious human soul into a herd of swine that went wild and drowned. Many societies have several funny nicknames to disguise pork and the pig. The modernization of pig farming and the popularity of pork notwithstanding, these animals have a dirty reputation to this day. They are a perfect destination for comparatively dirty stuff and that is how they play an invaluable role in the ecosystem. As humans, we do well to appreciate them from this other angle of their strength.
Pigs are omnivorous; they can easily clean our environment by eating a wide range of foods including agriculture and household waste that would otherwise be pollutants. For the many homes that are not connected to any garbage collection plan, keeping a “green pig” is a cost-effective option. You save on feed costs, harvest cheap meat and get organic manure for gardening. Simply mind the hygiene in and around the sty. At Camp Besania we do not keep pigs but we are blessed to donate edible waste to our pig-farming neighbors. Ultimately we contribute towards household incomes and a green environment with minimum effort. #WhispersOfNature.
